Aces Not Discouraged By Lions Defeat

They may have lost the battle but the war is far from over after Belle Vue’s Play Off ambitions took a knock from the Leicester Lions on Friday night, who left Manchester with a 42-48 victory.

The Rentruck Aces already have one foot comfortably in the top four but they were missing the talents of Max Fricke and Dan Bewley on a night where the powerful visitors were running riot.

Tero Aarnio, a rider not familiar within top flight circles, proved his tenacity against some of the sport’s biggest names while guesting for the home side; his final score doing him no justice.

Rohan Tungate meanwhile was showing no adverse effects from his leg injury after dominating the score charts on both sides of the pits, finishing his night on 16 big points from his six rides.

Steve Worrall continued to demonstrate his growing affinity for the heat leader positions with 9+2 while captain Craig Cook brought home 8 while Kenneth Bjerre added an uncharacteristic 6+1.

Team boss Mark Lemon said: “Failing to win at home is hard to stomach. At this stage of the year, a lot of riders and indeed a lot of clubs are starting to feel fatigued after such a long season.

“But it’s something you’ve got to deal with, and for us in addition we’ve had quite a few wet meetings lately that have thrown the cat amongst the pigeons particularly with the track.

“In fairness however, Leicester were very strong and they dominated. They performed in a similar manner the last time they were here so really their strength doesn’t come as a surprise to us.

“We got beaten by a better team, it’s as simple as that. We can’t let our heads drop after one bad result. We must learn from it and learn quick because there’s nowhere to hide in the Play Offs.”

There’s little time to dwell on Friday’s defeat for the Rentruck Aces as they get set to travel to both Poole and Wolverhampton this Bank Holiday Monday in pursuit of more precious league points.

They then return to Manchester on Wednesday August 30 to face off against the Rye House Rockets. Tickets available now online at
